Asymmetrical Placement
In an a symmetrical placement shot, the subject and environment is usually related. The slightly offside positioning gives more dynamic to the shot, and there is usually some eye movement to portray information throughout.
- Ansel Adams
In this shot, the main focus is the larger leafy tree asymmetrical to the left, however there are other vertical lines around. These lines mostly make the tree stand out but there is the smaller tree next to the main subject that also draws your attention. The main subject however is the larger leafy tree and its positioning helps draw focus and makes it stand out from the rest of the shot.
- Norman Parkinson
In this shot, the subject stands out through her asymmetrical positioning in comparison to the relatively even spread of the plants behind her. The colours used as well, the varying shades of pink also make both the subject and the environment stand out and at the same time they compliment each other.
