Compositions of Photography: Vertical Line

Vertical Line

The vertical line composition makes the lined subject strong, ambitious and rigid and/or upright.

- Ansel Adams

This photo shows the use of vertical lines in compositions. The contrasting shades - the black and the white - place emphasis on the lines, making them more obvious. The white lines of the tree (trunks) definitely shows the subject with an air of strongness. There are other plants on the trunks that pull away from the lines, but the colouring and positioning is of that that the main focus is still on the long, strong lines. The shot gives off the idea of upright and rigid, which trees have the essence of anyway. In general, the colours and position give strength to the already strong subject in the positioning.
